Departing Belfast

Making the short hop from Belfast to London doesn’t have to be complicated. This flight route is a well-traveled domestic route which you can fly via EasyJet, British Airways, LATAM Airlines, and Qatar Airways. You’ll need to have your US passport ready to board the flight, though since you aren’t crossing any national boundaries, you won’t need to fill out any customs forms.

Depending on who you book with and when you’ll have a different set of departure and arrival airports. The two options are to depart from Belfast International Airport and land at London’s Gatwick Airport or to depart from Belfast City Airport and land at London’s Heathrow Airport. The route which lands at Gatwick is a bit more prevalent, but not overwhelmingly.

Arriving in London

If your flight lands in Gatwick, you can easily hop on the Gatwick Express train, which can take you to downtown London near the bridge, or, if you’d prefer to head south, all the way to Bristol and Cardiff. The Gatwick Express connects to the rest of the underground at numerous stops, so you should be able to get to anywhere you want within London quite easily.

You can also get onto a bus if you’re more interested in visiting London’s outlying suburbs than the city itself.

If you land at Heathrow, you’ll probably be in Terminal 2, or Terminal 5 if you booked with British Airways. Like at Gatwick, Heathrow has robust transit connections to downtown London as well as the suburbs. Via the Heathrow Express, you can get to Paddington Station in less than half an hour with minimal hassle.

If you’d prefer to hop directly onto the underground without getting on an above ground train first, you can do so via no fewer than four subway stations at Heathrow. The subway stations are in the basements of Terminal 2, Terminal 3, Terminal 4, and Terminal 5. You’ll spend about an hour on the metro to get to downtown London, as there aren’t any express trains.

If you’d rather connect with the regional rail line rather than the metro subway line, you can do so directly from Heathrow’s National Rail station.   

Exploring London

London is a very different city than Belfast despite their similarly rainy continental weather. Unlike Belfast, London is known for its sky high prices, extreme bustle, and internationality.
