You've got a few options when departing from London, but when you come into Budapest you'll almost certainly be landing at Ferenc Liszt International Airport. A very wide variety of nonstop flights are available no matter which London airport you're departing from, and in all cases the flight usually takes just short of two and a half hours. Certain carriers tend to be based at certain airports, however. For example, if you want to fly Wizz Air you'll be departing from Luton, and if you want to fly RyanAir you'll be departing from London Stansed. A huge range of one-stop flights out of London are also available, but check the itinerary carefully as the total travel time can range from 4 to 22 hours!
Facilities at Budapest Ferenc Liszt International Airport
Budapest's airport has 24-hour luggage locker service, and lockers can be rented by the hour, day, week or month. You'll also find meeting rooms and mobile work desks that can be rented, protective luggage wrapping stations and a chapel that is open to all faiths (and can be used as a silent room when services are not being held).
The airport does have free WiFi available, but it is not available in all areas. You can pick it up in the SkyCourt, the Visitor Terrace and the halls of Terminal 2A and 2B. It is also limited to two hours of use per visitor per day.
Four lounges are available throughout the airport. The largest of these, the SkyCourt Lounge, is open to the general public. Menzie's Lounge is also open to the public. The MasterCard and Platinum Business lounges require a premium credit card to enter.
There are lots of places to eat throughout the airport. If you want the comfort of a familiar chain you'll find Burger King and KFC. You'll also find organic foods, smoothies, coffee, pastries, and sandwiches as well as Greek, Asian and Italian cuisine. The largest collection of restaurants is found in the SkyCourt area.
Things to Do Near Ferenc Liszt International Airport
The Castle District is often the first stop for many visitors to Budapest. It's dense with museums and cultural sites as well as quaint, charming shops and cafes. Buda Castle is the centerpiece, and admission is free. You may get lucky and catch a festival, art show or wine tasting event taking place there!
Budapest also has a number of UNESCO World Heritage sites. The entire Castle District is one of them, but there is also the bank of the Danube, Andrassy Avenue and Heroes Square to visit among other cultural wonders.
Hints and Tips for Ferenc Liszt International Airport
Budapest's airport isn't connected directly to the city's rail service, but it's very close to the Ferihegy station. A bus makes regular trips between the station and Terminal 2. A discount is available to passengers who have just arrived from a flight, so save your plane ticket. The airport is southeast of central Budapest, and whether by rail or by vehicle you can expect the trip to take roughly half an hour.
If you are using the Budapest rail or bus system, it's also important to know that simply having a ticket is not enough. The ticket has to be validated at a machine (usually near the boarding point) every time you change lines. If the ticket is not validated it is not considered legitimate, and if you are stopped by fare inspectors (of which there are many) you will be fined on the spot and potentially taken to jail if you cannot pay the fine.
