Leaving Wellington

If you’re planning on traveling from Wellington to Auckland, you’ll need to depart from the Wellington International Airport. Wellington Airport has only one terminal, and it tends to have a quiet but pleasant bustle of passengers during the morning hours.

Luckily, all flights to Auckland International Airport are direct when they depart from Wellington Airport. The selection of carriers departing from Wellington Airport for this route is a bit limited. On this route, you can fly via:

  • Jetstar
  • Air New Zealand
  • Quantas

Air New Zealand has the most flights along this route, and you should be able to have your choice of departure times when you book with them. Check with us here at Skyscanner to make sure that you don’t overpay for your ticket on this short hop.

Wellington Airport has some boutique shopping and eating opportunities that are quite impressive given the small size of the airport. Be sure to check out the Louis Sergeant cupcake foundry, the Mojo coffee bar, and the Beervana beer hall for delectable treats. Make sure that you have your passport ready for boarding.

Arriving in Auckland

You’ll soon touch down in Auckland International Airport’s domestic terminal. Wellington and Auckland share the same time zone, so there’s no need to worry about changing your clock. Make your way to the transit hub, and you’ll find car rentals, the Skybus express bus, the Airporter bus, and cycling paths.

Hiring a cab can be a bit expensive, but luckily both buses are inexpensive and very reliable. The Skybus express will take you to downtown Auckland, and there’s a convenient stop on the corner of Queen Street.

If you need to go to the suburbs rather than Auckland itself, hopping on the 380 Airporter bus will take you to Onehunga, Manukau City, and Papatoetoe Station. If you’re not sure which bus to get on, don’t be afraid to ask a New Zealander—they’re friendly, and communication won’t be an issue.

Departing Auckland International Airport

Auckland is much larger, more urbanized, and more expensive than Wellington. You should expect to pay a couple of dollars more for food and drinks in Auckland. Lodging and transportation can get especially expensive during the summer months, doubly so for areas near the waterfront.

Because of the cost of transit, Auckland is a city where many people ride bikes. If you’re comfortable on a bike, it’s probably worth renting one to solve all of your transportation needs. You can rent a bike at the airport.

Auckland’s climate is much like Wellington’s, so you should be fine with summer clothing from December through February and light fall clothing for March through November. Auckland avoids any extreme climates, but if you don’t bring a jacket, you might get a touch chilly during the night in the winter months.

If you’re running short on ideas for what to do, take a trip to Mt. Eden’s foothills to get a beautiful panorama of the city.
