How to Check In, Seat Assignment, Leg Room and Other Fees
Turkish Airlines check-in is simple as passengers can either utilize their online features for check-in or download the easy to use Turkish Airlines application for their smartphone. On the app, you can check in for your flight, get your boarding passes, and even check your Turkish Airlines flight status. Check-in is available from 24 hours before your scheduled departure, up until 90 minutes before your flight. It’s good to remember that you will need to arrive at least 2 hours beforehand for international flights and an hour before for domestic.
While most seat selections are offered free of charge, there may be a fee associated with certain spots. There is an exit row fee of $29.00 USD for Economy Short Haul, $50.00 USD for Medium Haul and $79.00 for Long Haul flights, for those passengers needing extra leg room. Depending on the aircraft, the size of the seats will vary, but if you need to make special arrangements, call the airline and specify your needs. As a passenger, you will need to decide whether you want to pay for an upgraded seat (and more leg room and space) or if you’re willing to sit in seats that are smaller in economy class. If you are on an AnadoulJet Flight, you will need to pay for your seat selection if you wish to have a specific spot.
Baggage Allowance and Fees
Turkish Airlines' baggage allowance is free on both domestic and international flights, up to certain weight limits. Each business class passenger, hold luggage is free for up to 30kg, for economy class, the limit is 20kg. Parents traveling with infants are allotted 10kg per infant plus a pram or collapsible buggy up to 115 cm. You are allowed more than one bag on the flight, but the total weight cannot go over your ticket class limit, otherwise, an excess baggage fee will apply. You will be charged 6 Turkish Lira (approximately $1.50 USD) per excess pound on domestic flights, however, the international rate for Turkish Airlines excess baggage fees will depend on the flight zone you are flying to, but the costs range from 3 Turkish Lira (approximately $0.75 USD) to 30 Turkish Lira (approximately 7.65 USD). Carry-on luggage must be able to fit either in the overhead compartments or safely below the seat in front of you. Your carry-on bag must not be over 8kg and must fit within the dimensions of 55x40x23 cm.
Turkish Airlines does specify specific baggage entitlements for certain destinations, so be sure to check whether your flight destination allows for more luggage before you travel on their detailed baggage allowance page.
Service On Board: In-flight Entertainment and Meals
Depending on the aircraft you are flying on and the length of your flight, Turkish Airlines provides a variety of in-flight entertainment for its passengers, including digital systems and individual touch-screens. Turkish Airlines has a great selection of offerings from classics, family, international, romance, comedy, Turkish cinema, cartoons, and more. In addition, Turkish Airlines has a variety of music selections, in case you want to sit back and relax on your flight. Musical offerings range from pop, jazz & blues, classical, new age, world music, classical Turkish Music and more.
In addition, if you have brought your own personal entertainment device, Turkish Airlines provides in-flight connectivity that allows passengers to receive texts and emails during their flight. On the larger aircraft (B777 and some A330) there are connections that allow passengers to connect their personal devices to the plane’s entertainment systems.
Turkish Airlines strives to give its passengers an in-flight experience and taste that rivals a traditional restaurant. Turkish Airlines is dedicated to giving you an exemplary in-flight experience—meal included. Prepared with fresh ingredients, Turkish Airlines also has a “Flying Chef” as support on their aircraft during Extended Range (transoceanic) flights, ensuring the taste, presentation and quality of meals served meets what’s expected of the world famous, “Turkish hospitality.” Turkish Airlines is also committed to offering choices to its frequent fliers and, as such, the menu on their aircrafts rotates weekly.
If you have a special meal request, you have until 24 hours before your departure time to make the request. Turkish Airlines will accommodate a nut allergy as long as the passenger has provided a doctor’s report. Turkish Airlines provides meals based on the IATA (International Air Transport Association) guidelines, so be sure to call ahead to order the meal you need.
Child Fares/Fees, Minor Service Guidelines
When flying on Turkish Airlines, children who have not yet reached 2 years old are not required to have their own seat. If preferred, these children may sit in the lap of their parent. Only one child is permitted per parent, so if one parent is traveling with two children, a seat will have to be purchased for the second child. If you require a baby meal for your child, be sure to make a request with the airline at least 24 hours in advance.
For children traveling alone, Turkish Airlines allows kids who are over the age of 7 to travel alone, as long as an Unaccompanied Minor Declaration Form is properly filled in and signed by the child’s parent or guardian. All children under the age of 7 must travel with a parent or guardian who is at least 18 years of age. Turkish Airlines can also provide a Companion Hostess for your child during the flight, but arrangements must be made at least 48 hours before the flight and additional fees will apply as all costs associated with the Companion Hostess will be the responsibility of the parent. If your child is traveling alone, the airline staff for Turkish Airlines will accompany your child during all processes at the airport and your child will be under the supervision of the cabin crew during the flight.
With Turkish Airlines, all pets must be transported in a proper carrier/crate, whether your pet is traveling with you in the cabin, or below in the aircraft hold. Your pet is not included as part of your free baggage allowance and the fee for your pet depends on the weight of your animal and its crate/carrier. The minimum charge for your animal and its crate/carrier is $70 USD. The maximum size for your pet carrier, in the cabin, is 23x40x55 cm. For animals and crates/carriers under 8 kg, the fee is a flat rate of $70 USD. If your pet is over 8kg, then the cost is determined by the excess baggage fee and your flight destination.
If you have a large animal that requires transportation in the airplane's hold, and your animal is over 8kg, then the fee is double the excess baggage fee (a minimum of $140 USD). If your animal is over 8kg, then the remaining cost is determined by the excess baggage fee for your specific region.
You must inform Turkish Airlines of your intention to fly with your pet so that all necessary documentation can be presented to the airline. You will need your pet’s health certificate, vaccination papers, and any information relating to their breed. You must ensure that your contact information (name, address, telephone number) are written on the side of your pet’s crate/carrier and it is your responsibility to ensure that you have all proper documentation for your pet and that you meet the requirements for entry for the country you are traveling to.
While the rules for traveling with your pet are long, it is for your safety and the safety of the other passengers. If you are unsure, be aware that Turkish Airlines has many modes of online support to help you through both the Turkish Airlines booking process and any further questions you might have about flying with a pet.
