Flights to Myrtle Beach AFB Airport (MYR)
The ARB in the name comes from the days when this airport served as a WWII Air Force training base. MYR, now a fully civilian airport, serves nearly 1.7 million passengers each year, and is the only South Carolina airport to offer scheduled international flights. It’s a focus city for Spirit Airlines, and also serves United Express, US Airways Express, Delta Airlines, Westjet, Porter Airlines, and Allegiant Air. Many flight routes are seasonal, with high volumes at key times, so if you book at the right time you can often find cheap tickets to Myrtle Beach.
Myrtle Beach AFB Airport is small and easy to navigate, with one main terminal which covers two floors and two concourses. It’s a friendly place to fly into, and is staffed by volunteer “Airport Ambassadors” who make it their business to help you if you have any questions. Ground transportation available includes taxis and an array of private hotel shuttles, though many people choose to rent a car.
What to Do in Myrtle Beach
The main attraction after flying into Myrtle Beach, is (of course) the beach, but the famous “Grand Strand” is actually a series of connected towns and shorelines, each with their own flavor. Just down the road from the bustling main resort area is the gracious expanse of Huntington Beach State Park. It’s home the beautiful Atalaya Castle and the Brookgreen Gardens, and is the perfect retreat for anyone weary of the bustling main drag.
Back at the heart of Myrtle Beach, there’s a never-ending stream of activities. Broadway at the Beach is a 450 acre entertainment center, stuffed with things to see and do, including dozens of shops, restaurants, and bars, mini golf, a water park, an IMAX 3D Theatre, and much more. If you’re in the mood for a show, the legendary Carolina Opry plays to packed houses night after night, with its patented brand of comedy, music, and southern charm.
Advice for Tourists Visiting Myrtle Beach
High summer, from June through August, is the very best time to visit if you’re looking for the full Myrtle Beach experience. Unlike much of the south, summer temperatures
are bearable, rarely reaching 90 degrees. The shoulder seasons can also see gorgeous weather and you’ll find much lower flight prices, but some attractions may be closed, and remember the hurricane season peaks in September.
