Departing From Sao Paulo Guarulhos Airport in Sao Paulo
Sao Paulo Guarulhos is Sao Paulo's main international airport and the busiest one in South America. There are three terminals at GRU. Your flight to Rio de Janeiro from Sao Paulo will typically depart from Terminal 2 or from Terminal 1 for Azul Airlines. There is a free shuttle bus that will transport you between Terminals 1 and 2, while Terminals 2 and 3 are linked by a passenger walkway. There is a fourth terminal building, but it is solely for air cargo.
The Sao Paulo Guarulhos Airport lies about 16 miles away from the city's downtown. If you have a car rental while in Sao Paulo, you may be able to drive to the airport and return your rental there, where up to five rental service companies are located. Check with your rental car company first.
Flying into Rio de Janeiro Internacional: What To Expect
This airport, Brazil's second busiest, is popularly known as Galeao International Airport, its original name. There are two terminals at Rio de Janeiro Internacional Airport, with most of these flights arriving at Terminal 2. There is a walkway bridge that connects the two terminals.
On the ground floor of Terminal 2 you will find rental car companies. On the first and second floors, there are more than 50 retail outlets and over 45 food and beverage concessions.
Ground Transportation at Rio de Janeiro Internacional Airport
There are a few different options for getting to your destination once you arrive at the airport and have collected your baggage. There are premium buses that will take you to different areas within Rio at a low cost of between $1.80 to $5.00. The BRT is a rapid transit bus service that operates 24 hours a day for fares that are less than $1.50. Rio de Janeiro also has a subway that is connected to the BRT network at the Vicente de Carvalho station. You may find it most convenient to take a taxi from the arrivals level at your terminal. Yellow taxi companies include Aerotaxi and Aerocoop and can cost about $19 to go to Ipanema.
